Stephen Maguire and John Higgins have done Scotland proud by winning the Snooker World Cup 23 years after Hendry, Higgins and McManus had been crowned champions. Being joint tournament favourites can always add pressure but huge bottle is amung both players leading attributes. Maguire led the way winning the first frame against China B’s Zhou Yuelong, it was then the 4 time World Champion John Higgins that doubled the Scots lead against Liang Wenbo.
The doubles frame was a close battle but it was the class and experience of Maguire and Higgins that took it to extend their lead to 3-0. It was then always going to be extremely difficult for the Chinese team to win and with Maguire in fine form he took the 4th frame to complete the victory and take $200,000 back to Glasgow.
After the recent World Final defeat for Higgins and a trophy less few seasons for Maguire this win will massively boost both players confidence aswell as bank balance.
As Captain Higgins had put Maguire on in the decider of the quarter final V Wales, a decision that could be the reason Scotland won the title. Maguire beat Day to progress to the semi’s and Scotland would then win 8 frames out of 9 played beating China A 4-1 (Ding Junhui and Yan Bingtao) before whitewashing the China B team in the final.
Congratulations Team Scotland World Cup champions 2019.
